Seifried

Nelson

Seifried Estate was established by Hermann and Agnes Seifried when they planted their first vineyard in Upper Moutere in 1973, well before the Marlborough wine region had been established. At the time, Nelson was well known for its hops, tobacco and apples, and Hermann recognised this was a potential location to plant vines.

Almost fifty years later, Seifried farm over 300 hectares of vineyards, across nine sustainably-accredited vineyard locations throughout the Nelson region.
In 2014 Agnes and Hermann were recognised for their contribution to the New Zealand grape and wine industry by being inducted as Fellows of New Zealand Winegrowers, one of the New Zealand wine industry’s greatest acknowledgements.

This was the first time in its history that a husband and wife team were recognised, and the first time a woman has been honoured.

Chris Seifried

Agnes and Hermann’s three children are fully involved in the family business. Son Chris Seifried is the head winemaker. Holding degrees in both oenology and economics, Chris joined the family business in 2002 after working in various wineries across Australia, Oregon, and Europe.

His sister Heidi supports him in the work in the vineyard and cellar. She graduated in viticulture and oenology in 2001 and acts as assistant winemaker.

Chris’s winemaking philosophy emphasises producing wines that offer exceptional value and over-deliver on quality. It’s an approach which aligns with the family's commitment to crafting affordable wines that everyone can enjoy.

Under his guidance, the Estate produces a diverse range of acclaimed wines, including Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah, and lesser-known varieties like Grüner Veltliner and Würzer.

Importance of Location

Importance of Location

Nelson is renowned as New Zealand's ‘Sunshine Capital’, receiving approximately 2,400 hours of sunshine annually. The warm days and cool nights help grapes develop intense flavour, vibrant aromas, and balanced natural acidity. At the same time, Seifried Estate’s vineyards occupy a number of locations, each with unique soil compositions and microclimates.

The Redwood Valley vineyard soils are a heavy clay loam, and have a high water-holding capacity, supporting varieties like Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling, and Gewürztraminer. By contrast, Rabbit Island and Queen Victoria vineyards have sandy, silty coastal soils (which are very porous and have limited water retention), and distinctly coastal weather. And vineyards like Brightwater and Edens Road feature gravelly soils with excellent drainage, ideal for cultivating varieties that thrive in well-drained conditions.

“There is something very rewarding when you know your team have put their heart and soul in to grow and make a product which we are proud to put our name on.” Anna Seifried
