Seifried Estate Sweet Agnes Riesling 2021

Seifried Estate was established by Hermann and Agnes Seifried when they planted their first vineyard in Upper Moutere in 1973, well before the Marlborough wine region had been established. At the time, Nelson was well known for its hops, tobacco and apples, and Hermann recognised this was a potential location to plant vines.

Almost fifty years later, Seifried farm over 300 hectares of vineyards, across nine sustainably-accredited vineyard locations throughout the Nelson region.
In 2014 Agnes and Hermann were recognised for their contribution to the New Zealand grape and wine industry by being inducted as Fellows of New Zealand Winegrowers, one of the New Zealand wine industry’s greatest acknowledgements.

This was the first time in its history that a husband and wife team were recognised, and the first time a woman has been honoured.

The grapes were hand selected, from the Estate’s Edens Road Vineyard, at the peak of ripeness from late March to April 2021, with a large portion of the fruit shrivelled and raisined, caused by natural dehydration. The grapes were picked, pressed and fermented in batches as grapes were selected during several passes through the vineyard. Fermentations were initiated immediately and continued for about three weeks. The young wine was then blended and stabilised before bottling in July 2021.
