Blank Canvas

Marlborough

The story of Blank Canvas is entwined with that of husband and wife team, Matt Thomson and Sophie Parker-Thomson MW. Having completed over fifty back-to-back vintages in both New Zealand and Europe as an award-winning winemaking consultant, Matt, together with Sophie, decided to create and build a wine brand together, with their first vintage in 2013. Blank Canvas embodies their own expression of art-meets-science with single-vineyard, small batch wines that push boundaries and challenge winemaking orthodoxies.

They work with nine exceptional, sustainable single vineyards, selected because of their suitability for the variety they're nurturing, with the right soil, microclimate and quality. This site-specific approach allows each vineyard to serve as a ""blank canvas,"" enabling the creation of distinctive wines that reflect their unique terroirs.

Exceptional Single Vineyards

Exceptional Single Vineyards

Blank Canvas sources its fruit from diverse, single-vineyard sites across Marlborough’s Wairau and Awatere valleys, the Gimblett Gravels in Hawkes Bay, and Central Otago’s Felton Road in Bannockburn.

Each location chosen because of its unique terroir, and the suitability of those sites for the wine styles they want to achieve. Their wines are small batch in nature and are a manifestation of the exact time and place they are from.

Equally important to Matt and Sophie is growers’ commitment to their land, and their dedication to sustainable practices, which in turn allow the authentic characteristics of terroir and vintage to emerge.

“One of the most exciting labels to come out of Marlborough in the past decade. I have yet to find a wine from Blank Canvas that I wouldn’t recommend wholeheartedly." Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous Media
