Man O' War

Auckland

Man O’ War is located on the beautiful island of Waiheke, in Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf in the Northern part of New Zealand. It’s a 4,500-acre farm owned by the Spencer family, with over 150-acres under vine, first planted in 1993. Today, there are no less than 75 separate vineyards across the farm.

The place is steeped in history, and the bay was a safe harbour for naval seafarers, who repaired their boats using timber from the local Kauri trees. Hence the name.

They have become well known for their Syrah, Chardonnay, and Waiheke’s signature Bordeaux blends. They also produce distinctly different Sauvignon Blanc, a seriously drinkable Pinot Gris, and a Rose which is a firm favourite at their beach front tasting room and cellar door.

Duncan McTavish

Man O’ War’s viticulture and winemaking team have remained unchanged for over a decade - guided by winemaker Duncan McTavish. His international winemaking CV is a long one, including winemaking roles throughout New Zealand. When he applied for a winemaking job at Man O’War in 2008, Duncan had never been to Waiheke Island before, and he’s famously never left.

The 75 vineyards are situated around the eastern end of Waiheke and Ponui Island as well. The scale and diversity is considerable, and the varieties they grow are diverse too, so the winemaker’s task is a challenging one. Duncan’s winemaking philosophy emphasises minimal intervention, allowing the natural qualities of the grapes to shine through, and approach which has helped him develop a reputation for crafting characterful wines that capture the essence of Waiheke Island.

Embracing Diversity

Embracing Diversity

The geographical spread of Man O' War's vineyards means they encompass a diverse range of soils and microclimates. Overall, the island's maritime climate provides a warm, dry environment with cooling sea breezes, which extend the growing season and contribute to the development of complex flavours in the grapes.

The vineyards are planted on steep slopes with varying aspects and elevations, allowing for optimal sun exposure and drainage. The soil composition includes clay, loam, and volcanic ash, imparting unique mineral qualities to the wines.

But at a very local level, variations in conditions make a difference, which is both a challenge and a benefit to the winemaker. It’s a combination of factors which results in wines which are aromatic and vibrant, and which have a distinct sense of this ruggedly beautiful island.

“Man O’ War is without a doubt one of New Zealand’s greatest wineries in the making and one to watch”. Robert Parker's "The Wine Advocate”
