Felton Road

Central Otago

Central Otago has become a hotspot for premium Pinot Noir, second only to Burgundy, and Felton Road’s wines are a large part of the reason. While committing to biodynamic practices and low-intervention winemaking, they make pure single-vineyard expressions of Pinot Noir, Riesling and Chardonnay.

Stewart Elms, was the man who in 1991 identified the north-facing slopes at the end of Felton Road as being an ideal spot for premium viticulture. It was Stewart that first planted vines on the property, but Nigel Greening who later bought the original vineyard and combined it with three others close by in Bannockburn.

Felton Road now exports to approximately 40 countries and are frequently ranked high up in the Drinks International magazine’s ""World’s Most Admired Wine Brands"" list, and their wines have become world-renowned and highly sought-after by sommeliers, collectors and critics alike.

Blair Walter

Blair Walter started at Felton Road in 1996, planning and readying the winery for its inaugural vintage in 1997. His skill and wide experience as winemaker brought a minimalist approach: making wines in the simplest, gentlest, most hands-free way possible.

With Nigel, in house viticulturalist Gareth King and his dedicated team, they embarked on an exciting adventure together: converting all the estate to organic (2002) and then to biodynamic farming. Felton Road gained Demeter certification for all its vineyards in 2010.
Blair’s long and intimate knowledge of their Bannockburn vineyards, continues drive the production of truly world class wines, the international demand for which continues to exceed what Estate is prepared to make.

Importance of Place

Importance of Place

Felton Road gives a lot of focus to the lands where their vines are grown. Bannockburn was identified by Stewart Elms, who understood the potential of the place - an old mining settlement nestled in a sub-alpine landscape, considered today as one of Central Otago’s ideal sites for the production of premium wine.

The estate has grown to encompass four vineyards in Bannockburn, with 32 hectares of grapes as well as a similar amount of hill country dedicated to farming.
The poor, free draining soils together with the unique climate, conducive to a slow and long ripening season, are ideal for the production of premium quality Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling.

Vineyard management at Felton Road is carried out with meticulous attention and care. Each vintage, the grapes are hand-picked and handled separately in the cellar, for an accurate track record of quality differences within blocks and from clonal and rootstock diversity.

“We got there through a combination of a relentless pursuit of quality, setting the very highest environmental and ethical standards, supporting and nurturing our staff, and being perpetually curious.” Nigel Greening, Owner, on Felton Road’s achievement
