Deep Down

Marlborough

Deep Down Wines was founded by Peter Lorimer and Clive Dougall, who was Winemaker at Seresin Estate for 12 years where he produced Marlborough’s first certified organic wine. Their boutique winery is all about producing certified organic, small-batch, single-vineyard wines. They make just four small batches of wine from four different vineyard sites, a Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinto Noir, and a fascinating Arneis, little known in New Zealand.

The key to Deep Down, transparency. As well as being made from certified organic grapes, and having as little as possible added to the products, so that each wine is like a transparent window into each vineyard.

The business achieved B Corp certification on 2023, reflecting their dedication to ethical and sustainable business practices, and underlining their belief in the importance of ‘doing the right thing’.

Winemaking in Tune with Nature

Winemaking in Tune with Nature

Sourcing grapes from Marlborough vineyards gives any winemaker a head start – it is New Zealand’s most renowned wine-growing region, known for its cool climate, diverse soils, and long sunshine hours.

But what sets Deep Down apart is that their fruit comes from certified organic growers, who share Clive and Peter’s belief that to make exceptional wine they have to give back to the vines and soils.

And hands-off winemaking is key. Deep Down’s wines are all fermented naturally by the vineyard yeasts that live on the grapes, which promotes the true character of the vineyard, while delivering increased depth, complexity and texture to the wines. As a result, they are full of personality, whilst being balanced and restrained, and a true expression of the grape and vineyard.

“Wines of integrity come from great land, and that takes plenty of work, plenty of compost and plenty of biodiversity.” Clive Dougall
